• Brushing –I have found that a Bristle comb brush works well when grooming a Shih Tzu because it goes all the way to the skin. Plastic combs can cause skin irritations.

  Grooming your Shih Tzu is very important because they have thick hair and it needs to be kept neat. This helps to maintain parasites and dirt that get into their hair.

  Shih Tzu’s hair has a natural path so just follow the hair flow and make sure that you comb out all the knots and mats.

  If brushing is not done regularly it can result in your dog having to have his or her hair cut short or shaved. They shed very little so that is a good thing.

  Once you start brushing him or her they will start looking forward to it because they will enjoy it. This is also a good way to get to know your dog better.

  The oils that are in their coats help to keep their coats clean and in some products this could possibly mess the oils up that are already in their coats.

  One thing to consider is using shampoo or bathing products that are “natural.”

  It is good to give them a bathe at least one a week or every two weeks depends on your dog. If the dog is not outside a lot then 2 weeks will work. Shih Tzu grooms themselves like other dogs and they do a good job at it.

  Dental – Shih Tzu care with their teeth is also very important. Vets can clean their teeth but depending on your vet it can run from $25 - $50 dollars.

  Some people wait until their Shih Tzu Health Problems with his or her teeth show up before they think about cleaning the dog’s teeth. Dog’s teeth are like humans they need to be kept clear. Tatar build up also causes bad breath.

  Shih Tzu care should have their teeth cleaned about 3 – 6 months. As odd as this may sound Shih Tzu’s really enjoy having their teeth cleaned.

  If your Shih Tzu does not like it you can get Dental treats that help to keep their teeth clean and they work great! Dental treats help in fighting bacteria, gum disease and bad breath.

• Nails – Shih Tzu nails are also important. Shih Tzu’s do not like to have their toenails cut.

  If you are not able to trim his or her nails take it to the vet and let them do it. The fee is usually free for a vet to trim their nails. If you trim the nails yourself please remember that it is about “length.”

  If you trim the nails to short the dog’s toe may bleed, he or she may be uncomfortable, and in a rare event you may have to take him or her to the vet. If you cut into the quick you can stop the bleeding with styptic powder. This is something you should have in your Dog First Aid Kit.
