Yearly Blood Test Saved My Dog's Life

by Stacy
(BC, Canada)

Zak-a-Monkey

Zak-a-Monkey

We were planning on getting our vet to clean our dog Zak's teeth (he's an 11 year old Cockapoo) and took him in for his preliminary check-up, where they took a blood sample to make sure everything was okay before they put him under for the cleaning.

We found out that a couple of his liver enzyme counts were very high (12 times as high as they should have been) and have immediately started him on milk thistle and SamE supplements as well as changing his dog food to something with less fat, less protein, less sodium and more fruits/veggies.

The vet thinks that because his diet may not have been the best for him, that after awhile we should see a marked improvement in his liver.

If we wouldn't have taken him in for his routine exam, we may not have been able to catch his liver disease and we may have lost him very quickly - hopefully now he will live a very long life (Cockapoos can live up to 28 years).
