Mental Health of the Dog

The Mental Health of the Dog is influenced greatly by the care that is given.

The healthy and well-kept dog is a very happy and content canine. Some dogs still tend to have issues with mental health. Regardless of the care that is given, some breeds in particular display signs of mental health problems.

In the following some of these problems are briefly discussed.

  • Depression can be a common cause for concern with your dog. Dogs, like many humans, can suffer greatly from depression. When the surroundings of the dog are changed, the canine can become depressed. Seasonal and weather changes often affect them as well. Medical problems can play a great role in the Mental Health of the Dog. Depressive states can be triggered by illnesses or disease. Dogs that suffer with depression can have a loss of appetite and weight. They may become fatigued and withdrawn.
  • Anxiety is another type of mental health of the dog. The anxiousness of a dog can be seen in moaning, drooling, shivering, whines and panting. Owners should recognize this issue and try to mend whatever is causing the anxiety.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorders or OCDs are also seen in dogs. This mental health problem requires attention like the others. The genetics of a dog are often to blame for OCD. Dogs will display odd behaviors that are usually injected on objects such as dishes or items with wheels. The dog may even have a certain behavior that is displayed upon itself such a fixation with the tail or a paw.
  • Stress is commonly seen in the canine. Certain ailments can have negative effects on the mental health of the dog and cause tremendous stress. The dog may seem agitated or withdrawn. Many tend to simply lay and not want to move.

Most experts agree that the best remedy for any mental health problem that your dog seems to be suffering from is to show them love and attention. This provides a degree of comfort and content to the canine that can be given in no other manner.

Most owners of dogs know when there is something that is not right with their pet. Paying attention to your dog is the best way to be alerted when there are any problems.

Sound and stable mental health will allow for the overall good health of the dog. Many vets treat the mental health issues of canines. If your dog tends to be showing signs of some mental health problem, you should seek the advice and treatment of a veterinarian.

Prevention of Mental Health of the Dog Problems

There are some ways that the dog owner can help to ensure that there are no mental health problems. Dogs that are left alone a lot tend to display mental health issues through misbehaviors such as tearing up household items.

Try to place your dog in a secure area where there is nothing for the pet to destroy when you are going to be gone. Some prefer to find a sitter or to stable the dog with a reputable provider when they are going to be away.

Never scream or shout at your dog. This causes anxiety and stress and can lead to mental issues for the dog. Never train a dog by whipping or chaining the dog. The dog becomes bitter and develops emotional problems much like a human would do.

Treat your dog as you would want to be treated to ensure years of companionship and loyalty as well as overall health.
