Why owning a pet
makes you happier

Brits are undoubtedly a nation of pet lovers. In fact, the latest research conducted by analysts TNS suggests that one in two households currently own pets. The most popular pets are cats and dogs, with around eight million of each currently residing in homes across the UK.

According to recent research, in addition to extending the size of our families, our animal-loving nature may actually reward us with improved help and happiness. A study by Miami University in Ohio, discovered that pet owners are healthier and have greater self-esteem than those who don’t own pets.

With tiny paws and noses having potentially healing benefits, it makes sense that pet owners want to protect the health and safety of their companions. Pet insurance plays a big part in this and if you want to safeguard the wellbeing of your pooch or kitty you’ll want to conduct research to find the right policy. If you are a pet owner you can get Dog insurance from Pets at Home to protect your pet and your peace of mind, after all your dog is doing the same for you and your happiness.

Lead researcher on the Miami University study, Allen R McConnell, explains: “We observed evidence that pet owners fared better, both in terms of well-being outcomes and individual differences, than non-owners on several dimensions.

“Specifically, pet owners had greater self-esteem, were more physically fit, tended to be less lonely, were more conscientious, were more extraverted, tended to be less fearful and tended to be less preoccupied than non-owners.”

Separate research conducted by the Pet Foods Manufacturers Association, revealed that nearly 60 per cent of pet owners credit their animal friends with making them a happier person, with a similar number claiming their cuddly companion helps them to relax. Almost a third of the 2,000 adults questioned said they thought their pet made them a healthier person.
